The rules

How GPA with a 4th subject is worked out

SSC, Dakhil, HSC and Alim all use the same grade scale and the same 4th-subject rule. Only the subject lists differ.

Grade point table

Marks (%)Letter gradeGrade pointAdded as 4th subject

70–79A4.00+2.00
60–69A-3.50+1.50

40–49C2.000
33–39D1.000

When a subject is out of 200 (such as Bangla 1st and 2nd paper together), the grade comes from the percentage: 160 out of 200 is 80%, which is A+.

Step by step

  1. Turn each compulsory subject’s marks into a grade point.
  2. If any compulsory subject is F, the GPA is 0.00 and the result is F. Stop here.
  3. Add up the grade points of all compulsory subjects.
  4. If the 4th subject’s grade point is above 2, add (grade point − 2) to the total.
  5. Divide by the number of compulsory subjects. Anything above 5.00 counts as 5.00.

Example: SSC science, 9 compulsory subjects

The 9 compulsory subjects add up to 40.5 grade points. Without the 4th subject the GPA is 40.5 ÷ 9 = 4.50.

  • A+ in the 4th subject (+3)4.83 · A
  • B in the 4th subject (+1)4.61 · A
  • C or F in the 4th subject (+0)4.50 · A

What happens if you fail the 4th subject?

You lose nothing. Failing the 4th subject doesn’t fail the exam; it just adds no points, so the GPA stays at the compulsory average. Failing any one compulsory subject, on the other hand, makes the GPA 0.00.

How are 4th subject marks added?

Grade points are added, not marks. The 4th subject adds its grade point minus 2: 3 for A+, 2 for A, 1.5 for A- and 1 for B. C, D or F add nothing. The total is still divided by the number of compulsory subjects only; the 4th subject isn’t counted.

Common questions

What people ask most about GPA and the 4th subject

How is GPA with a 4th subject calculated?

Add the grade points of all compulsory subjects. If the 4th subject’s grade point is above 2, add the part above 2 to that total. Then divide by the number of compulsory subjects only. Anything above 5.00 counts as 5.00.

What happens if I fail the 4th subject?

Failing the 4th subject doesn’t fail the exam. It just adds no points, so the GPA stays at the average of the compulsory subjects.

How are 4th subject marks added?

The marks aren’t added directly; the grade point is. The 4th subject adds its grade point minus 2: 3 for A+ (5), 2 for A (4), 1.5 for A- (3.5) and 1 for B (3). C, D or F add nothing.

Can GPA be more than 5?

No. Even if the 4th subject takes the total above 5.00, the GPA counts as 5.00.

What is the GPA if I fail a compulsory subject?

An F (below 33%) in any compulsory subject makes the GPA 0.00 and the result F, however good the other marks are.

Do Dakhil and HSC use the same rules?

Yes. SSC, Dakhil, HSC and Alim use the same grade scale and the same 4th-subject rule; only the subject lists differ. If your list is different, rename, add or remove subjects in the calculator.

Is this calculator’s result official?

No, it is for understanding and checking the calculation. The education board publishes official results. Board exams require passing creative, MCQ and practical parts separately; this calculator works from each subject’s total marks.
